Borderlands First Trailer Released By Lionsgate

Borderlands First Trailer

The first trailer for the film adaptation of the game franchise has just been released.

The new movie, which was first announced back in 2015, tells the story of an unusual band of misfits in search of a secret vault supposedly full of incredible riches.

The cast, led by Cate Blanchett as the iconic bounty hunter Lilith, also includes Ariana Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, and Florian Munteanu. Jamie Lee-Curtis and Jack Black also feature in leading roles as members of her rowdy vault-hunting gang.

Developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K, the first instalment of the Borderlands game series dates back to 2009 and is set in the fictional, mineral-rich world of Pandora. The franchise has expanded into six games between sequels, prequels and spin-offs. With both single-player and cooperative modes, the games are characterised by unique cartoon-style graphics and offbeat comedy.

The game series has sold over 83 million units. This includes 28 million for Borderlands 2 (2012), representing 2K's highest-selling game to date. This also makes it one of the most commercially successful video game series of all time. The franchise has sold more copies of its games than other acclaimed series such as Halo and Mortal Kombat. The games have also won a host of awards, with Borderlands 2 picking up the Action Game of the Year prize at the 16th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards.

Other instalments include Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel (2014) and Borderlands 3 (2019).

Borderlands is being directed by Eli Roth, who is also on script duties alongside Joe Crombie. Roth is best known for horror slasher films such as Hostel (2005) or, more recently, the holiday-themed Thanksgiving (2023). Avi Arad, who worked on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), is co-producing alongside Erik Feig.

Borderlands is released in cinemas worldwide on 9th August 2024.
