With an official release date and casting news making headlines in the last couple of months, Scream 5 continues it's pre-production planning with the official word that Neve Campbell will be reprising the iconic role of Sydney Prescott. She will be joining cast members Courtney Cox and David Arquette in their original roles in the slasher series. This will be the first film in the Scream franchise without Wes Craven in the director's chair, but according to a statement from Campbell, the team behind Scream 5 “have shown such love, respect and admiration for Wes Craven and all that he's created in the ‘Scream' franchise. I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro.”
This news from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group provides a lot of reassurance to Scream fans as it's hard to imagine a Scream movie without it's main heroine. This new film comes from the writer and directors that brought you last year's horror hit Ready or Not, and the fresh-faced newcomers to the cast so far are Jack Quaid (The Boys), Melissa Barrera (In the Heights), and Jenna Ortega (You). The only plot detail known at this time is that a young woman (presumably Sydney Prescott) will be returning to Woodsboro after a series of grisly crimes have been committed. Scream 5 is set to be released on January 14, 2022.
