Back in 2012, Iron Sky proved to be something of a cult hit, which was quite something for a crowd-funded Finnish movie, yet it was a concept that shouldn’t have worked. I mean, it’s a story about Nazis escaping to the moon in 1945 and coming back in 2018 to invade Earth! Even though the end result wasn’t perfect and was rough around the edges, it proved to be a pleasant surprise and ever since then, a sequel has been on the cards. Perhaps too long as the much belated sequel, Iron Sky: The Coming Race, took almost seven years to get released, so was the wait worth it? Not really.
Unfortunately, this film is a giant misfire that completely negates the quirky, weird charm of the original by including incredibly forced jokes, annoying characters and a nonsensical plot. Yes the first film also had a plot that was silly but at least there was some charm and novelty involved which is completely absent in this film. This story involves heading to the centre of the Earth where it’s inhabited by a reptilian alien race known as the Vril who have been living there since the prehistoric age and have been manipulating events ever since. They created the human race, as well as camouflaged themselves as major world leaders and historical figures like Adolf Hitler, Margaret Thatcher, Osama bin Laden, and so forth.
This is ludicrous and not the good kind, plus it retroactively destroys the first film by altering certain character motivations and personalities as a result, and it’s just not fun to watch. There’s zero stakes throughout, and whenever there’s action, it just looks as though a bunch of stuff is happening on screen. Just like the first film, the design work is pretty solid, but there’s nothing else to support or breathe life into it, and by the time it’s all finished, you’ll quickly forget about it and move on to something else, which was what this reviewer did.
This is a real shame since the filmmakers involved intended this film to be “one for the diehard fans”, and it was the fans that helped this film to get made in the first place through its crowd-funding origins, however, there’s no escaping the fact that this film fails as a solid follow-up to the first film. It’s not one of the worst films to have been released this year so far, and it’s definitely better than the recent Hellboy reboot, but that’s only because this film is just a sad disappointment.
