Angelina Jolie: Marvel’s newest superhero?
Not much is known about the post-Endgame Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, despite the lack of official announcements, it is expected that the next two films to debut after Spider-Man: Far From Home will be a Black Widow solo movie and a cosmic-mythology epic, The Eternals. After that, there’s been talk of sequels to Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Far From Home and a martial arts movie, Shang-Chi, but none of that is important right now.
Because the big news of this week is that The Eternals has been in talks with a rather big star to front the film, and that star is Angelina Jolie. It is unknown what role Jolie will be playing, or who else will join her in the cast. But what we do know is that the Eternals are an ensemble of enhanced beings created by the Celestials, whose appearance was mistaken in ancient times for that of the Gods, so expect Jolie and her future co-stars to see a lot of big action beats and explosive displays of power.
Central to this group is the character of Sersi, whose powers are mostly focused on transmutation and manipulating the molecular structure of objects, so if we had to take a guess, we’d say Jolie’s probably playing her? Whatever the case, we’ll probably find out when…
The Eternals begins filming in August 2019.
Chucky’s new voice comes from a galaxy far, far away…
The rights behind the Child’s Play franchise are an interesting thing. Although the series, last seen in Cult of Chucky, had an entry as recently as 2017 and will soon be moving forward with a television series, the rights to the original ‘Child’s Play’ have been bought and used as the basis for a reboot, which will exist alongside the original series, but with more of a sci-fi spin.
The new film stars Aubrey Plaza, and a trailer released a month ago showed that this new Chucky’s evil nature would not come from a supernatural element, so much as it would a corrupted A.I:
And this morning, we discovered who would be voicing the new A.I. based Chucky. Thus far, Brad Dourif has voiced Chucky in all prior Chucky films, but this new entry will see legendary Star Wars actor Mark Hamill take over the role.
While Hamill is primarily known as the actor behind the heroic Luke Skywalker, he has built an impressive career as a voice actor over the years, with his most famous voice-acting role being that of the Batman villain the Joker, which no doubt indicates that regardless of how this new film turns out, Chucky himself will sound plenty menacing.
Child’s Play slashes into cinemas on June 21st 2019.
Before Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn is back with Brightburn
A lot of the talk surrounding James Gunn has been, understandably, focused on his upcoming Suicide Squad film (which Jai Courtney claims he will return in as Captain Boomerang, despite previous indications that this was mostly cutting ties with the previous film) and his reinstation as the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
However, before either of those projects hit screens, Gunn is producing another superhero story, this one much darker in nature. Presented as a twisted take on the origin of Superman, Brightburn, directed by David Yarovesky, and written by Gunn’s younger brother and cousin (Brian and Mark) stars Elizabeth Banks as a mother who finds a child in a crashed spaceship, and is terrorised as that child starts using his powers to wreak havoc on their hometown.
This week, Gunn returned to Twitter for the second time since June 2018 after his initial firing from Marvel (the first being to say he was back with Marvel) to promote the film with a new extended trailer:
