The Accountant debuted last year to mixed reviews. I, for one, loved it, but I appreciate that it’s not for everyone. VultureHound‘s own Katie Hogan wrote up a review on the DVD release, giving it two stars. Elsewhere, the film has a score of 7.4 on IMDb, but only 52% on Rotten Tomatoes, with most critics over there ranking it ‘rotten’.
Love it or hate it, the film did it’s job. The story was resolved, the bad guys had their brains blown out and we were fortunate enough not to have an unnecessary romance between Ben Affleck and Anna Kendrick’s characters forced upon us.
All of that together makes it somewhat surprising that director Gavin O’Connor is re-teaming with Affleck to bring us a sequel. According to Deadline:
‘Warner Bros is mobilizing a sequel to the 2016 hit The Accountant. Screenwriter Bill Dubuque, director Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck are in talks to return, along with the producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Mark Williams. All those deals are being worked out right now. I’m told they will then work out the beats of the story, which likely will include Jon Bernthal, whose character asserted himself at the conclusion of the first film.’
Deadline cites that on the film’s $44 million budget, it went on to gross $155 million. So although The Accountant 2 may not seem like a film people were clamouring for, Warner Bros. are probably banking on it being a savvy investment.
Affleck will next be seen in Justice League, which hits cinemas November 17th 2017.
